Heated Mirror conversion
Start by removing the mirror from the car. Remove the 3 nuts and pull the wiring through the hole in the door. |
Next remove the glass assembly from the mirror housing. It just pulls out. |
Now is a good time to completely disassemble the mirror. The painted cover pops off (it glued on) and then you can access the 3 large screws that hold the motor frame in. |
You should now have the mirror out. |
Remove the pivot screws and place the mirror in an oven, face up, at 250° F for 20 minutes. |
You should now be able to VERY CAREFULLY pull the mirror off the backer and peal off any extra glue. |
Remove any extra glue from the backer plate and clean it up. |
Repeat the procedure with the donor mirror paying careful attention to not damage the heating elements. The heating elements and the heat spreader are all you need to save. |

Here is the trimmed heat spreader. |

And the heat spreader with the heater element attached to the back of the mirror. Use very thin layer of clear silicon glue to attached the heat spreader. |
Use the same clear silicon glue to attach the mirror to the backer. |
Make sure the hole where the wiring goes through is completely sealed. |
The glass should sit even in the backer and not rock where the wiring goes through. When the glue is dry, reattach the pivot screws. |
Run the wiring back through the same hole that the motor wiring goes through. |
Reassemble the rest of the mirror. The black wire goes to ground, the brown one goes to the rear defrosted output on the rear defroster switch. |
